DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 17\n10:00 a.m. \nDiane Arkin\, Former Senior Lecturer\, National Gallery of Art\, Washington\, presents on the subject of artists in love. \nRomantic influences flourished among artist couples throughout the 20th century and played a fascinating role in furthering new modes of expression. Whether partnering briefly or for extended periods of time\, famous overt and covert lovers exchanged ideas and imagery that triggered some of the most important avant-garde art of the modern era. Join us as we examine the connections between such artist pairs as Pablo Picasso and Fernande Olivier\, Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O’Keeffe\, Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock\, and Christo and Jeanne-Claude who drew inspiration from one another\, and whose art took paths unimaginable without the impact of their companions. \nFor fifteen years when V.I.P’s\, dignitaries\, superstars\, and celebrities came to the National Gallery of Art\, Diane Arkin was the Senior Lecturer and scholar routinely called on to provide engaging\, entertaining\, and thought provoking lectures on subjects spanning treasures from the middle ages through the most challenging art of today. Diane continues to lecture nationally and internationally on museum education\, trends in theory and practice\, active learning strategies\, museums as unique learning environments\, and a broad range of art historical topics. Prior to coming to the National Gallery of Art\, Diane served as Curator of Education at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and College of Art and Design in Washington\, DC\, and as Director of Education at The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. Diane’s work as a Program Coordinator in both the Resident Associate Program and the International Study Tours division of the Smithsonian Institution included years of lecturing both domestically and internationally. Before entering the museum field Diane had an active career as an academic\, serving as Assistant Professor of Art History at George Mason University and at The University of Colorado\, and also teaching extensively throughout the Washington\, D.C. area. \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. The conversations discovered\, interpreted then re-interpreted by different generations\, exist because stone holds the direct marks of artists eternally. How to acknowledge and respect the work of earlier artists and find a unique voice for myself inside this material\, marble? This is the enormous challenge\, as a contemporary artist.” – Elizabeth Turk \nElizabeth Turk is an American artist and sculptor known for marble sculpture and community installations. Turk’s marble work searches the boundaries of paradox: the contemporary in the traditional\, the lightness in weight\, the emptiness in mass\, the fluidity of the solid\, extended time in a moment. Her intricately carved sculptures defy gravity and make possible that which seems impossible. Inspired by the natural world\, she references its myriad of elegant organic structures\, yet her work is not complete until abandoned to larger environments. Turk is a MacArthur Fellow\, an Annalee & Barnett Newman Foundation recipient\, and a Smithsonian Artist Fellow\, among other awards. Turk received her MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art\, Rinehart School of Sculpture in 1994\, her BA from Scripps College\, Claremont\, CA in 1983. Sor Juana has been called the ‘first feminist\,’ the first to defend women from the oppression of men. She is also the first in our hemisphere to defend women’s right to knowledge. Gifted with intelligence\, grace and beauty\, she so passionately sought knowledge\, that she asked her mother to dress her as a man so that she could attend the university\, which at the time was closed to women. Sor Juana continued her studies independently and was so brilliant\, that she caught the attention of the Viceroy. She went to live in the Royal Court of the New Spain and became a sensation for her knowledge and beauty. To pursue a literary career\, she became a nun and went on to write numerous plays and exceptionally beautiful poems. Towards the end of her life\, she affirmed\, that God’s greatest gift to humanity was free will\, idea that angered the ecclesiastical hierarchy\, who silenced her and forced her to relinquish her library. Sor Juana died in obscurity during the great plague in México City\, but her work lives on as an inspiration to women and freedom lovers everywhere.” – Gregorio Luke \n\nGregorio Luke is an internationally acclaimed lecturer and curator. Mr. Luke has given over 1\,000 lectures in México\, Europe\, Asia and the United States in institutions such as The Library of Congress\, The Smithsonian Institution\, The San Diego Museum of Art\, the Detroit Institute of Art\, México’s Palacio de Bellas Artes\, Argentina’s Centro Borges and The Florence Biennale\, as well as universities such as Harvard\, Columbia\, UNAM and Georgetown among others. Her scholarship has been published widely in journals and exhibition catalogues. \n\n9:10 a.m. SESSION I: THE GLOBAL GOLDEN AGE OF SPANISH ART\n(20 mins. each presentation)\nModerator/Discussant: Roxana Velásquez \n  \nCultural Hybridization and Model Transfer: Flanders\, Spain\, and America and Shared Identities \nPRESENTER: Benito Navarrete Prieto\, Professor and Chair of the Department of History and Philosophy\, University of Alcalá\, has focused principally on the study of paintings by artists from Andalusia and Madrid\, as well as Spanish drawing in general. He has published extensively and curated a number of exhibitions. He has also served as Director of Cultural Infrastructure and Heritage for Seville City Council and as a scientific advisor for the Diego Velázquez Research Centre. \n  \nThe Values of the Hispanic Cultural Traditions as Illustrated in the Visual Arts \nPRESENTER: Marcus Burke\, Senior Curator\, Hispanic Society of America\, has served on the faculties of Yale University\, Columbia University\, and New York University Institute of Fine Arts\, among others. He has previously worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University and has contributed to exhibitions at many other institutions. \n  \nShifting Glances in a Multicultural Realm: Viceregal Golden Masterworks in Tepotzotlán\nPRESENTER: Alejandra Cortés Guzmán\, Researcher\, National Museum of the Viceroyalty has worked in curatorial affairs\, research\, and exhibitions coordination in three museums in Mexico City: National Museum of San Carlos\, National Museum of Art\, and Palace of Fine Arts\, and has served as acting director of the National Museum of the Viceroyalty\, in Tepotzotlán. In her current role\, she is developing a new curatorial script for the renovation of the permanent collection\, among other projects. \n  \nThe Global Rubens\nPRESENTER: Niria E. Leyva-Gutiérrez\, Director\, Art History / Museum Studies\, Long Island University\, Post. Niria’s areas of specialization include the art and architecture of early modern Europe\, colonial Latin America\, and modern art in Latin America and the Caribbean. She has published extensively in the field. \n  \nTrue Portraits? Cabrera’s Sor Juana and Guadalupe\nPRESENTER: Jeanette Favrot Peterson\, Professor of Art History\, University of California\, Santa Barbara. Jeanette’s teaching and research have focused on the field of Pre-Columbian and colonial Latin America visual culture. Her longstanding interest in the intersection of European–indigenous visual cultures has led to several articles on the images in the Florentine Codex. Her most recent book follows the trans-Atlantic trajectory of a Marian devotion. \n  \nAsia\, the Hispanic World and the Emergence of a New World through the Lens of Art\nPRESENTER: Sofía Sanabrais\, Independent scholar based in Los Angeles and former Assistant Curator of Latin American Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She has been the recipient of fellowships from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Mellon and Getty Foundations. Her research addresses the history of images\, objects\, and texts in colonial Latin America and early modern Europe. She is currently writing a book about the Mexican early colonial manuscript known as the Codex Mendoza. \n  \nAn East Coast Home for Spanish Art: Henry Clay Frick’s Call and The Frick Collection’s Response to the Art of the Peninsula\nPRESENTER: Susan Grace Galassi\, Senior Curator\, Frick Collection\, where she has worked since 1991. A specialist in nineteenth- and twentieth-century art\, she is the author and contributor to numerous publications and international exhibitions on Picasso and has contributed to many Frick publications on the permanent collection\, with a particular focus on Spanish art. She is currently at work on a monograph on Monet and an exhibition on Whistler for the Frick. \n  \nSan Diego and Andalucía: Unheralded Cultural Connections\nPRESENTER: Michael Brown\, Curator of European Art\, The San Diego Museum of Art\, organized the exhibition Art and Empire: The Golden Age of Spain and is editor of the accompanying catalogue. His expertise is painting in Spain and the Hispanic Americas and he is the author of numerous articles on Spanish portraiture and the history of collecting Hispanic art. Copley Auditorium \nSOLD OUT\nSpeaker: Gabriele Finaldi\, Ph.D.\, Director of the National Gallery\, London \nA world-renowned expert on 17th-century Spanish art\, Finaldi studied at London’s prestigious Courtauld Institute where he wrote his dissertation on the important Spanish Baroque painter Jusepe de Ribera\, whose work is featured in the exhibition. Prior to his current appointment at the National Gallery\, Finaldi was Deputy Director for Collections and Research at the Museo Nacional del Prado\, Madrid. He has curated exhibitions in Britain\, Spain\, Italy\, Belgium and the US\, and he has written catalogues and scholarly articles on Ribera\, Velázquez\, Zurbarán\, Italian Baroque painting\, and religious iconography. Copley Auditorium \nCornelia Feye\, author and publisher\, will speak on the subject of female artists of the 20th century. \nThe 20th century began with an explosion of new discoveries and artistic styles all over Europe. The trauma of World War I further prompted the development of art forms from Expressionism\, Fauvism\, to Cubism\, Dadaism\, and Surrealism. Women were actively involved in these new approaches to art. This lecture will explore the work of Susanne Valadon\, Paula Moderson-Becker\, Gabriele Münter\, Emily Carr\, Sonia Delaunay\, Georgia O’Keeffe\, Hilma af Klint\, Käthe Kollwitz\, Alice Neel\, Frida Kahlo\, Dorothea Tanning and others. \nAfter her lecture\, Cornelia Feye will be signing her newest book Private Universe inside Bibliotique\, the Museum’s boutique shop (located across the sculpture court from the auditorium). Her book will be available for sale in Bibliotique for $12.00. Members will receive their discount\, as with all purchases!
