SUMMARY:Friends' Lecture & Reception: Bouguereau & America (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT\nFriday\, November 22\n6:00 p.m. Lecture\n7:00–8:30 p.m. Private Reception\nJames S. Copley Auditorium \nWidely embraced by American collectors of the 19th century\, William-Adolphe Bouguereau was once anointed the standard-bearer of cultural achievement throughout Europe. SUMMARY:Guest Lecture Series: Finding the Traditional in the Contemporary
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 15\n10:00 a.m. \n“Making art with rocks is something humans have been doing throughout history\, across all cultures. The conversations discovered\, interpreted then re-interpreted by different generations\, exist because stone holds the direct marks of artists eternally. How to acknowledge and respect the work of earlier artists and find a unique voice for myself inside this material\, marble? This is the enormous challenge\, as a contemporary artist.” – Elizabeth Turk \nElizabeth Turk is an American artist and sculptor known for marble sculpture and community installations. Turk’s marble work searches the boundaries of paradox: the contemporary in the traditional\, the lightness in weight\, the emptiness in mass\, the fluidity of the solid\, extended time in a moment. Her intricately carved sculptures defy gravity and make possible that which seems impossible. Inspired by the natural world\, she references its myriad of elegant organic structures\, yet her work is not complete until abandoned to larger environments. Turk is a MacArthur Fellow\, an Annalee & Barnett Newman Foundation recipient\, and a Smithsonian Artist Fellow\, among other awards. Turk received her MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art\, Rinehart School of Sculpture in 1994\, her BA from Scripps College\, Claremont\, CA in 1983. In 2017 she launched ET Studios (a CA non-profit) to develop open community experiences. \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led tours at 11:30 a.m. \n$13 members | $16 nonmembers | $8 seniors and military | Free for students (with ID\, available on-site at the event only) \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council \nFeatured: Elizabeth Turk\, Collar #7 and Huntington Pier\, Courtesy of the artist.

Copley Auditorium \nComplementing the Museum’s installation of David Hockney’s The Valley (Mountains in Var\, near La Garde Freinet)*\, Hockney presents a fascinating dive into the life\, loves\, and career of one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary artists. SUMMARY:Sor Juana\, The First Feminist
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 16\n10:00 a.m. \nBy Gregorio Luke\nNoted scholar Gregorio Luke will offer a fully illustrated presentation on this fascinating individual: “One of the major attractions of Art and Empire: The Golden Age of Spain is the portrait by Miguel Cabrera of Juana Inés de la Cruz\, rarely seen outside of México. Sor Juana has been called the ‘first feminist\,’ the first to defend women from the oppression of men. She is also the first in our hemisphere to defend women’s right to knowledge. Gifted with intelligence\, grace and beauty\, she so passionately sought knowledge\, that she asked her mother to dress her as a man so that she could attend the university\, which at the time was closed to women. Sor Juana continued her studies independently and was so brilliant\, that she caught the attention of the Viceroy. She went to live in the Royal Court of the New Spain and became a sensation for her knowledge and beauty. To pursue a literary career\, she became a nun and went on to write numerous plays and exceptionally beautiful poems. Towards the end of her life\, she affirmed\, that God’s greatest gift to humanity was free will\, idea that angered the ecclesiastical hierarchy\, who silenced her and forced her to relinquish her library. Sor Juana died in obscurity during the great plague in México City\, but her work lives on as an inspiration to women and freedom lovers everywhere.” – Gregorio Luke \n\nGregorio Luke is an internationally acclaimed lecturer and curator. Mr. Luke has given over 1\,000 lectures in México\, Europe\, Asia and the United States in institutions such as The Library of Congress\, The Smithsonian Institution\, The San Diego Museum of Art\, the Detroit Institute of Art\, México’s Palacio de Bellas Artes\, Argentina’s Centro Borges and The Florence Biennale\, as well as universities such as Harvard\, Columbia\, UNAM and Georgetown among others. Mr. Luke has been Director of the Museum of Latin American Art MoLAA\, Cultural Attaché of México in Los Angeles and First Secretary of the embassy of México in Washington D.C. In 1995 he was conferred the Irving Leonard Award by the Hispanic Society of the Library of Congress. He is the author of over twenty publications. \n\nTickets to the lecture include same-day admission to the featured exhibition Art and Empire: The Golden Age of Spain. \n$7.50 members and students | $12.50 seniors and military | $15 nonmembers \nFeatured: Miguel Cabrera (Mexico\, 1695–1768) Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz\, 1750. SUMMARY:Guest Lecture & Tour Series: Hard Bodies: Contemporary Japanese Lacquer Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 19\n10:00 a.m.\nJames S. Copley Auditorium \nAndreas Marks\, Ph.D.\, Head of Japanese Art and Korean Art at the Minneapolis Institute of Art\, will speak on the subject of contemporary Japanese lacquer sculptures. \nSince the Neolithic era\, artisans in East Asia have coated bowls\, cups\, boxes\, baskets\, and other utilitarian objects with a natural polymer distilled from the sap of the rhus verniciflua\, known as the lacquer tree. Lacquerware was – and still is – prized for its sheen\, a lustrous beauty that artists learned to accentuate over the centuries with inlaid gold\, silver\, mother-of-pearl\, and other precious materials. \nSince the late 1980s\, this tradition has been challenged. A small but enterprising circle of lacquer artists have pushed the medium in entirely new and dynamic directions by creating large-scale sculptures\, works that are both conceptually innovative and superbly exploitive of lacquer’s natural virtues. To create these forms and shapes\, contemporary lacquer artists bend tradition to their needs. Kofushiwaki Tsukasa’s Fallen Moon I is four meters (13 feet) long\, a scale enabled by the kanshitsu technique\, developed in China during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 AD)\, in which a base of lacquer-saturated hemp fiber is created with a mold. Many artists have gravitated to polystyrene\, a lightweight\, flexible\, yet immutable material\, such as Aoki Chie’s Body 09-1. For The Dual Sun\, Kurimoto Natsuki used an even more modern base: an automobile hood. \nDr. Andreas Marks is the Head of the Japanese and Korean Art Department at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. From 2008 to 2013 he was the Director and Chief Curator of the Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture in California. He has a Ph.D. from Leiden University in the Netherlands and a master’s degree in East Asian Art History from the University of Bonn. A specialist of Japanese woodblock prints\, he is the author of 14 books. His “Publishers of Japanese Prints: A Compendium\,” is the first comprehensive reference work in any language on Japanese print publishers. In 2014 he received an award from the International Ukiyo‐e Society in Japan for his research. He has curated exhibitions in a variety of media from pre‐modern to contemporary art and visual culture at 25 museums including the Birmingham Museum of Art\, Detroit Institute of Arts\, Honolulu Museum of Art\, San Antonio Museum of Art\, and the San Diego Museum of Art. The Minneapolis Institute of Art just showed his exhibition “Love Affairs: The Tale of Genji in Japanese Art” and another one of his exhibitions\, “Hard Bodies: Contemporary Japanese Lacquer Sculpture\,” just closed at the Morikami Museum in Delray Beach\, Florida\, on March 31st. His new coffeetable book on masterpieces of Japanese woodblock prints will be published in autumn by Taschen. \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture & Tour series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led tours. \n$13 members | $16 nonmembers | $8 seniors and military | $5 students \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council \nFeatured: Aoki Chie\, born 1981. SUMMARY:Guest Lecture & Tour Series: The Road from Giorgione and Caravaggio to the Greatness of Spanish Painting
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, February 15\n10:00 a.m.\nJames S. Copley Auditorium \nBeginning from the fine Giorgione portrait in the Museum’s collection\, British art historian\, Nigel McGilchrist\, traces the path which leads from the extraordinary innovations of Giorgione and Titian in Venice – and later of Caravaggio (whose work both Velázquez and Goya saw when they visited Rome) – into the heart of Spanish painting in its Golden Age: El Greco\, Zurbarán\, Sánchez Cotán\, and the greatest Spanish masters.  This is a fascinating story of journeys\, influences\, illnesses\, challenges and emulation: it results in some of the most individualistic works in the history of art. \nArt-historian Nigel McGilchrist was a scholar at Winchester College and at Oxford\, and has lived in the Mediterranean area – Greece\, Turkey and Italy – for almost forty years\, working initially for the Italian Ministry of Arts in the field of wall-painting conservation.  He taught at Rome University\, for the University of Massachusetts\, and was formerly Dean of European Studies for a consortium of American Universities.  He lectures widely in art and architectural history at museums and institutions in Europe and the USA\, and has written a detailed survey of the art and architecture of the Aegean world in twenty volumes (McGilchrist’s Greek Islands).  This is the eleventh time in almost twenty-five years that he has spoken at the San Diego Museum of Art.  His home is now on the Greek island of Kythera. \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture & Tour series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led tours. \n$13 members | $16 nonmembers | $8 seniors and military | $5 students \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council \nFeatured: Giorgione (Giorgio de Castelfranco)\, Portrait of a Man (‘Terris Portrait’)\, 1506.
