DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 21\n11:00 a.m.–noon and noon–1:00 p.m.\nMOPA@SDMA and The San Diego Museum of Art Museum Art Studio \n  \nExplore image transfers\, memory\, and identity in this hands-on workshop with artist Mirae kh RHEE\nJoin artist Mirae kh RHEE for a hands-on photo and image transfer workshop inspired by her solo exhibition Mirae kh RHEE: Constellations\, on view at MOPA@SDMA June 21\, 2025–January 4\, 2026. In this special workshop with the artist\, participants will create fabric collages that explore the relationship between place\, memory\, and identity. Learn about photo transfers using a gel medium process and expand your art making skills. Participants are invited to bring and incorporate their personal black-and-white laser-print images relating to ancestry. Personal photos should be no larger than the size of a postcard. \nThis workshop welcomes individuals and families\, including those who may not have a direct line to their past. Through the act of transferring images onto cloth\, we’ll honor the stories we carry and the constellations of kin—real or imagined—that shape who we are. \n  \nPlease join us promptly at the MOPA@SDMA entrance. Árboles’ performance piece draws directly from the themes of Women in Focus\, reimagining them through embodied gestures that speak to resilience\, sensuality\, and the multiplicity of womanhood. \nCome for the live performance\, stay for the full experience. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 16\n10:00 a.m.\nSpeakers: Verónica Muñoz-Nájar\, PhD\, Associate Curator of Art of the Spanish Americas\, the Thoma Foundation\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \nJoin us as Dr. Muñoz-Nájar examines the fascinating intersection of art\, colonialism\, and cultural transformation in 18th-century Amazonia. The presentation explores how Spanish administrator Lázaro de Ribera established drawing schools in the Mojos region as a tool for both “civilizing” Indigenous populations and spurring economic development. \nThe lecture highlights the remarkable work of Indigenous artists including Heugene\, Avirá\, Guayacho\, Guacayane\, Noé\, and Hojeari\, who studied and reinterpreted European masters like Carracci\, Guercino\, and Le Brun. The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council is hosting the trailblazing artist Holly Roberts\, whose work masterfully blends photography and painting to create mysterious and intriguing pieces. For over four decades\, Roberts has explored her rich inner world through her art. With a deep connection to nature\, both human and animal\, she was an early pioneer in mixing the mediums of painting and photography. From painting directly onto photographic surfaces to cutting and shaping photographs onto textured\, painted canvases\, there is a unifying thread that binds her innovative work. \nDuring this lecture\, Roberts will provide insight into her creative process and the inspirations behind her evocative pieces that defy convention. Her artworks\, which span from the 1980s until today\, meld different media in a unique way to evoke universal human experiences and concerns. SUMMARY:Dynamic Equilibrium: Berenice Abbott’s Documentary of the Invisible

Miller\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Art History\, Mills College at Northeastern University\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \nThe San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council is excited to welcome Sarah M. Miller\, Ph.D.\, who will explore how photographer Berenice Abbott’s unique theory of documentary photography was shaped by her experience amidst Europe’s photographic avant-gardes and her collaboration with American art critic Elizabeth McCausland. Abbott put this theory into practice in her WPA-sponsored project Changing New York (1935-39). But when she published the project in book form in 1939\, it was subjected to editorial censorship that made it impossible for readers understand its scope\, creativity\, message\, and political implications. For four decades\, James Balog has studied ancient cultural assumptions about the relationship between human nature and the rest of nature. Blending art and science\, Balog’s photographs deliver profound new insights about the environment today. \nThe current epoch of geologic time is known as the “Anthropocene” to reflect the pervasive and enduring traces of human activity left on the Earth. Through innovative imagery\, his projects interpret significant aspects of what has changed\, what’s survived\, and what changes are projected for the future. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 20\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeakers: Carlo Miranda\, Artist and Anita Feldman\, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs\, The San Diego Museum of Art\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \n“Sonder” is a term coined by author John Koenig\, meaning “the profound feeling of realizing that everyone\, including strangers passing in the street\, has a life as complex as one’s own\, which they are constantly living despite one’s personal lack of awareness of it. Each subject has their own story\, their own dreams and desires and worries.” \nLocal artist Carlo Miranda (Filipino-American\, b. 1988) showcases ten recent paintings in his intimate exhibition\, Carlo Miranda: In Search of Sonder\, on view at The San Diego Museum of Art through November 19\, 2023. His personal and hyperrealistic portraits\, painted in oil on panel\, depict those closest to him: his family\, his friends\, his barber. \nJoin Miranda and Anita Feldman\, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs\, for an in-person conversation as they discuss Miranda’s life and the inspiration for his exhibition at the Museum.
