Screen on the Green: Picture of Dorian Gray

Location: Botanical Garden Lawn

Event Navigation

Thursday, 8:00 p.m.
Film begins at sundown.

Take a trip into the art world as you sit under the stars in beautiful Balboa Park. Grab a picnic, a blanket, and a few friends and enjoy a selection of films whose themes take inspiration from the Museum’s permanent collection, celebrating the recent completion of a large-scale reinstallation of these galleries. Films begin at sundown (approximately 8:00 p.m.) at the Botanical Lawn (east of the Museum.)

This artfully filmed adaptation of the 1891 Oscar Wilde novel of the same name uses light and shadow to create an ominous atmosphere in a cautionary tale about vanity and morality. The portrait of Dorian Gray that was used in the film, inserted using three-strip Technicolor, was painted by American artist Ivan Albright and now resides in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Panama 66’s Grab-n-Go will be open until 8:00 p.m.

1 hour 50 minutes. This film is not rated, but would be considered suitable for most audiences by current Motion Picture of America Association standards.
