Speaker: Benoy K. Behl, filmmaker, art historian, and photographer

This is a unique opportunity to be led by Benoy K. Behl, art historian and documentarian, on a journey through Indian art and culture and its influences across Asia. During this 5-day mini course, lectures will be profusely illustrated by Behl’s well-known photographs and films, including scarcely seen ancient murals. He will discuss the continuity of the tradition of painting in India, the Indian pantheon and its epics, and the magnificence of Chola bronzes, among many other artistic aspects of the region. Selected films will be shown from his vast repertoire of documentary films produced across India and many countries of Asia.

 

Course Schedule

April 5: Introduction to Indian art and illustrated talk on mural paintings of India

April 6: Birth of deities in Indian art

April 7: Spread of Indian culture across Asia (talk and film screening on Japan)
Film on miniature paintings of Kangra, mainly on themes of Lord Krishna

Apr 8: Talk and film on the aesthetics of art of the Gupta period (ca. 5th century CE)
Talk and film on the bronzes of Tamil Nadu, mainly of the Chola period

Apr 9: Talk and film on sacred Buddhist dances
Talk and film on Ramayana performances in 10 countries of South and South-East Asia.

All presentations will be followed by Q&A.
