Speaker: Gabriele Finaldi, Ph.D., Director of the National Gallery, London

A world-renowned expert on 17th-century Spanish art, Finaldi studied at London’s prestigious Courtauld Institute where he wrote his dissertation on the important Spanish Baroque painter Jusepe de Ribera, whose work is featured in the exhibition. Prior to his current appointment at the National Gallery, Finaldi was Deputy Director for Collections and Research at the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid. He has curated exhibitions in Britain, Spain, Italy, Belgium and the US, and he has written catalogues and scholarly articles on Ribera, Velázquez, Zurbarán, Italian Baroque painting, and religious iconography. Finaldi’s talk will be the closing installment of the Museum’s 2018–19 Docent-sponsored Guest Lecture Series.

This lecture is presented in connection with Art and Empire: The Golden Age of Spain.
