Position Title: Director, Development and Membership

Position Summary

The Director is responsible for planning, executing, and evaluating fundraising and development initiatives. The Director (i) works with Senior Leadership to establish fundraising priorities and objectives; (ii) creates fundraising strategies to meet specific program goals; (iii) identifies, profiles and solicits current and prospective corporate, individual, and foundation prospects; (iv) develops and cultivates positive relations with donors and prospects, and (v) solicits and stewards major donors. This position exhibits a true commitment to the mission of the Museum.

Primary Duties

  • Responsible for Museum wide fundraising strategy for contributed income, including major gifts, the annual fund, special events, government, corporate and foundation support as well as general and circle membership.
  • Hire, train, and supervise development and membership staff. Manage the day-to-day activities of the development and membership departments and oversee implementation of the fundraising strategy.
  • Provide broad-based private and public support for the Museum through the management of comprehensive programs and by developing relationships with individuals, corporations and foundations.  Oversee a coordinated calendar of activities to achieve strategic and revenue-generating goals in all areas of development and membership.  Responsible for the thoughtful presentation of a donor-centered stewardship program for donors to the Museum.  Ensure recognition of distinguished contributors.
  • Work in close partnership with the Executive Director, the Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and the Marketing, Curatorial and Education departments to build strong, coordinated, and supportive relationships with the Museum’s community of donors.  Coordinate key strategies and activities with staff from other departments.
  • Supervise the successful planning development and implementation of the Museum’s membership programs.  Attend member events and donor receptions.
  • Oversee management of the donor database; set policies and procedures for retention of data and reporting. Ensure robust data management systems to support a growing development and membership program. Develop and maintain system of metrics for monitoring progress against departmental goals.
  • Provide staff leadership to the Development Committee of the board.  Assist in training board members in development best practices and engage them in various fundraising initiatives. Attend Board meetings and routinely report on the Museum’s fundraising strategies.
  • Represent the Museum to external constituencies, as necessary, including Trustees, volunteers, donors, members, contractors, and vendors.
  • Plan, monitor and report on annual department expense and revenue budgets.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications 

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required, with ten years+ experience in fundraising within a museum or similarly complex not-for-profit organization.
  • Experience: Substantial experience implementing fundraising plans and cultivating relationships with a proven track record of achieving contributed income departmental targets of $4M+ annually and a successful track record in securing sponsorships and gifts in the $50,000+ range.
  • Knowledge: The position requires an in-depth knowledge of fundraising strategies. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Superior interpersonal and leadership skills to collaborate effectively with Museum constituencies and staff.
  • Skills: Proven leadership and management capabilities; able to schedule and complete multiple short term and long term tasks. Some evening and weekend work is required. The person will be responsible for keeping within budget and managing the results of other workers. The work requires considerable degree of accuracy and exactness in performing the job.
  • Other Requirements: Positive, “can-do” attitude, flexible, team-oriented, attends to detail and shows initiative. Proficient in software such as Microsoft office and donor management software, preferably Altru.

Physical Demands

  • The job requires time working outside the Museum and requires considerable time sitting or standing.
  • The position requires a considerable amount of time communicating by phone, email and in person. The job requires some climbing of stairs and reaching.
  • Some travel will be required.

Work Environment

  • Working indoors in office environment in a climate controlled environment with light background noise.
