Marsha Vargas Handley, former president of the International Netsuke Society and Senior Member of the American Society of Appraisers, explains the purpose, history, and the variety of types and subjects that can be found in Japanese netsuke, a unique utilitarian art form of miniature sculptures used to suspend items from a Japanese man’s obi sash.
