John M. and Sally B. Thornton Rotunda

The spectacular John M. and Sally B. Thornton Rotunda echoes the Spanish architecture of the facade with two stories of open space and a grand staircase. This area accommodates a variety of special events, from formal table-service dining to standing receptions to elegant wedding ceremonies. You can create a memorable event, whether it’s an intimate occasion or a big extravaganza, all with private access to the breathtaking galleries.

Public Hours
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday: 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Friday: 10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.
Sunday: noon–5:00 p.m.
Closed Wednesday

Rotunda usage includes full access to all permanent collection galleries open at the time of the event. Views of special traveling exhibitions may or may not be included in the fee. Available open galleries and art in event spaces are subject to change at any time.


May S. Marcy Sculpture Court & Garden

The May S. Marcy Sculpture Court features a stunning colonnade and sunset views of both the Plaza de Panama and adjacent Sculpture Garden. The May S. Marcy Sculpture Garden features lush landscaping, picturesque views of the California Tower and is abundant with nineteenth- and twentieth-century sculpture. The Sculpture Court & Garden are large and versatile spaces that can accommodate presentations, ceremonies, alfresco film, receptions, and seated meals.

Exclusive use of the Sculpture Court clear of Panama 66 restaurant operations is periodically available for special events. All requests that require Panama 66 to close for business must go through an internal review for approval. Only a limited number are available per year. During the summer season, a sound ordinance applies and dates vary year to year.

Public Hours
This space is open to the public weekdays starting at 11:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on weekends.


James S. Copley Auditorium

Adjacent to the court and garden is the James S. Copley Auditorium. Equipped with a performance stage and audiovisual capabilities, the auditorium is a large and versatile open space that accommodates presentations, large meetings, receptions, and seated dinners.

Public Hours
This space is closed to the public but can be utilized privately or in conjunction with Panama 66 operations.

Panama 66, the restaurant and bar in The San Diego Museum of Art’s May S. Marcy Sculpture Court, features lunch and dinner, extended bar service, and weekend brunch. Enjoy all-local craft beers on tap, exhibition-themed cocktails, and locally sourced seasonal sandwiches, salads, and more.

Private Events

Panama 66, which occupies the May S. Sculpture Court & Garden daily, closes for private, evening events a limited number of times per year. Please contact the Museum’s Special Events Office for more information at events@sdmart.org or call 619-696-1924.
