Japanese Gardening: Monet’s Inspiration

Event Navigation

Museum Galleries
Saturday, 11:00 a.m.

In the late 1800s, Japanese works of art and notions about the culture began to enter France and inspire the group of artists that came to be known as the Impressionists, including Claude Monet. Monet collected Japanese woodblock prints and modeled the famous water lily pond and bridge in his garden in Giverny on one of these prints. In conjunction with the exhibition Reflections on Monet, a docent from the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park presents a talk discussing the principles and design techniques essential to Japanese gardens.
