Virtual Event

This talk will explore The British Museum’s reconceived display of South Asian Islamic art and material culture in The Albukhary Foundation Gallery of the Islamic World inaugurated in 2018 from a curatorial perspective.

Following a brief illustrated overview of the gallery and its conceptual structure, which shows a transformation from the previous 30-year installation to a complete reconception of Islamic art and material culture, it will focus on the representation of South Asia within this context and the thinking behind the selections of works ultimately put on display.

The talk will end with examples of South Asian arts of the book included in the installation and emphasize the conservation considerations that led to display decisions for important works such as the Museum’s Hamzanama folios, ultimately presenting parallels to The San Diego Museum of Art’s own renowned Edwin Binney 3rd Collection of South Asian paintings.
