A contemporary American filmmaker responds to an iconic 17th-century Spanish still life in this publication that accompanies the 2020 exhibition Juan Sánchez Cotán and Cauleen Smith: Mystical Time and Deceptive Light. The dialogue began when artist Cauleen Smith visited The San Diego Museum of Art and became fascinated with one of the gems of the collection, Quince, Cabbage, Melon, and Cucumber by Juan Sánchez Cotán and then set out to create a filmic response to the work. The careers of both artists are explored in essays by Victoria Sancho Lobis and Michael Brown, along with full-page illustrations, including all extant still life works by Sánchez Cotán.

San Diego Museum of Art’s former Assistant Curator of Exhibitions, Patrick Coleman was the winner of the Berkshire Prize for a First or Second Book of Poetry for his new book, “Fire Season”. Occasioned by the birth of a first child and originally spoken aloud into a digital audio recorder on the poet’s long commute between the art museum where he worked and his home in a neighborhood burned in the Witch Creek Fire of 2007, each of the poems in Patrick Coleman’s first book resists the confusions of twenty-first-century parenthood, marriage, art, and commerce.

Soft-touch paperback cover. 45 poems with accompanying color illustrations. 102 pages.
