Susan Read Anderson, a retired Foreign Service Officer who served at the US Embassy in Tokyo from 2000–2003, presents an exploration of many of the temples and gardens of Japan, as seen through the wonder struck eyes of an American diplomat as she learned the meaning of the Japanese word shibui—restrained elegance.
